You knew this day was coming: It’s the day that federal COBRA subsidies for unemployed workers runs out.
As a blog post at The New Republic put it:
Some Americans who lost their jobs in the recession are about to lose something else: Their access to affordable health insurance. And it’s thanks to the same backwards thinking that’s preventing broader action to boost the economy.
Ever since February 2009, the federal government has been subsidizing COBRA premiums. COBRA is the program that allows people to keep their job-based insurance even when they lose their jobs. The premiums tend to be very expensive, particularly for people out of work, so the subsidies make a big difference.” (more…)
